Cartel Chief Extradited To US For Texas Lawyer Murder

The financial chief of a major Mexican cartel has been extradited to the United States for the murder of a lawyer in Texas.

The Mexican authorities have confirmed that Ramon Villarreal Hernandez, alias El Mon, was extradited to Texas in the United States on Sunday on charges of federal conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire and stalking.

Hernandez was reportedly the financial operator of the Beltran Leyva cartel and US authorities believe he was involved in the homicide of Juan Jesus Guerrero Chapa, the lawyer of the former leader of the Gulf Cartel, Osiel Cardenas Guillen, who was shot to death whilst leaving the Southlake Town Square shopping centre in Texas in 2013.

Hernandez and his brother, Rodolfo Villarreal Hernandez, another head of the Beltran Leyva cartel, hired two hitmen to shoot Guerrero Chapa to death in his Range Rover in the shopping centre car park, according to the federal charges from a Texas court.

Judicial reports state that a Toyota Sequoia came up behind the lawyer’s car before an armed man got out and shot into the driver’s side of the Range Rover.

The lawyer died at the scene after receiving several gunshot wounds to the chest whilst his wife, who was also in the car, escaped unharmed.

Hernandez was charged with stalking as the conspirators had reportedly followed the victim for months before the murder.

Reports state the US authorities have guaranteed that the suspect will not face the death penalty.

Hernandez was arrested in May 2018 in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, and was taken to the South prison before being transferred to the Altiplano maximum-security prison in Mexico state on 10th February 2019.

The Beltran Leyva cartel were involved in a bloody war against the Sinaloa Cartel formerly led by Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman.

Hernandez was reportedly the cartel’s financial operator until the deaths of both leaders of the cartel, Alfredo and Arturo Beltran Leyva, after which the criminal organisation splintered into several different groups.
