The dog owner, named only as Anna, said her five-year-old bulldog Almaz had been rushed for emergency surgery after swallowing a pair of her knickers while playing at home in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

She said she noticed the underwear was missing shortly after seeing him chewing on something.

The dog had been left alone for a few hours when he apparently pulled the underwear from the drying rack and swallowed it.

She feared a blockage and took him to a veterinary clinic, where an ultrasound scan confirmed the obstruction.

Vets operated and removed the garment, after which Anna paid RUB 80,000 (GBP 750) for the procedure.

She said Almaz had a long-standing habit of chewing fabrics such as towels, blankets, and duvet covers, but had never eaten them before.
