British Boys Incurable Leukaemia Cured With Cell Therapy

A British boy who has been cured of an ‘incurable’ leukaemia with experimental treatment in Singapore after a UK hospital told him there was nothing more they could do for him, is ready to come home.

The six-year-old Oscar Saxelby-Lee has been cancer-free for almost 6 months, after receiving treatment at the National University Hospital in Singapore, a sovereign island city-state in maritime Southeast Asia.

The young patient was suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, a cancer of the lymphoid line of blood cells which progresses rapidly and if untreated is often causes death within weeks or months.

According to local media, Oscar is only the second child to have received this experimental treatment.

In December 2018, the young boy was diagnosed and since then has undergone chemotherapy, months in isolation and several stem cell transplants, all to no avail.

Oscar’s parents, Olivia Saxelby and Jamie Lee told media that doctors in the UK told them there was nothing more they could do for him as they had exhausted all treatment options.

According to the little boy’s parents, the health workers at the UK hospital told them all that they could offer was palliative care, which aims to relieve the symptoms as much as possible.

However, they decided not to give up and after seeing an experimental treatment offered in Singapore the family managed to raise 500,000 GBP with a social media campaign to pay for the treatment.

At the hospital, Oscar received CAR T-cell therapy, a form of immunotherapy that uses specially altered T cells to cure cancer, as well as a second bone marrow transplant from his dad.

Oscar has now been cancer-free for almost 6 months and is almost ready to travel home to the UK.

The family posted on social media saying: “Results are in. I’m still Cancer FREE!
“6 months without any sign of that horrid disease, 3 months post receiving Daddy’s MAGIC CELLS!

“This is a huge milestone and we couldn’t have gotten here without each one of you!”
