Brits are top of the table for deaths and injuries from falling off hotel balconies according to a Majorca-based group who set up to document ‘balconing’ incidents on the island.
According to local media, the Facebook group ‘Balconing Mallorca’ launched the league system as a humorous alternative to the concerns of overtourism and incidents involving partying tourists to the Spanish Balearic Islands.
‘Balconing’ is when a tourist jumps into a swimming pool from a balcony or falls from a height while climbing from one balcony to another.
The Majorca-based group has promised to update the league with each new case that appears in the media.
So far this summer, six ‘balconing’ incidents have taken place in Majorca involving visitors from Britain, Germany, Australia, Belgium and Sweden.
According to ‘Balconing Mallorca’, the UK currently tops the league with six points, with the other five mentioned countries tied on 1 point each.
The league table has six columns: the number of cases, the number of injuries, points for injuries (one point per case), the number of deaths, points for deaths (three points per case), and the overall total.
Four Brits have made the UK the league leaders with a total of three injuries and one death.
Earlier this month, a 20-year-old British tourist died in Magaluf after falling from a second-floor balcony at the Sol Wave House Hotel where he was staying with three friends.
The unnamed tourist was the first death of the holiday season, according to local media.
However, three other people fell from balconies in the same week.
On 31st May, an 18-year-old Swedish man was seriously injured after falling 10 feet from a balcony in Magaluf.
On 4th June, a 19-year-old British man fell from a height of 26 feet and broke his ankle.
On 5th June, a 35-year-old German man was seriously injured after falling from a second-floor hotel balcony.
