A 24-year-old biker has died after an owl flew into his motorcycle helmet.
Nico Duo lost control of his motorbike and was killed in the fall after the owl flew into his helmet while riding in the municipality of Ariano nel Polesine in the northern Italian region of Veneto, according to the news site Ansa.
The young man was riding his Ducati through a small village when the large bird hit him, causing him to lose control of the motorbike and fall to the tarmac.
The emergency services arrived on the scene and took Duo to a hospital in the town of Rovigo where he died soon after arrival due to the serious injuries he sustained in the fall.
The local police confirmed that the biker was hit by an owl because his helmet still had feathers inside it, and the dead bird was found nearby.
Duo played for the water polo team PN Padovanuoto who said in a statement: “There are no words to comment on such a tragedy, just a deep sadness. PN Padovanuoto is close to Nico’s family and friends in this moment of pain.”
It is unclear if the police are continuing the investigation.
