A baby elephant has died after becoming stuck between a tree and a zoo wall in a freak accident while it was playing outside.
The little tusker, called Yindi, 4, died in the Dutch DierenPark Amersfoort on Saturday, 28th December, with the zoo saying in a statement: “Unfortunately, we end this year with sad news.
“Elephant Yindi passed away today at the age of 4. In the afternoon, while playing, Yindi got her hind leg stuck between a wall of tree trunks in the outdoor enclosure.
“The only way to free her safely was to temporarily sedate her. Unfortunately, Yindi did not wake up from this. At this moment, the other elephants, Indra and Kina, are saying goodbye to Yindi in the indoor stable.”
The statement continued: “The loss of Yindi is a great blow to the park, the zookeepers and all the visitors who loved to visit Yindi.
“We wish everyone much strength with this loss.”
Elephants are known for mourning and saying goodbye to deceased members of their species.
That is why the other Amersfoort elephants, including her mother Kina, are now in the stable to say goodbye to Yindi, according to local media.
