30,000-Tonne Bus Station Swivels 90 Degrees Into Place

This 30,000-tonne brand new bus station has been shifted 90 degrees and moved 288 metres in a huge operation to make room for a high-speed train station.

The huge Houxi bus station, which is yet to be used, stands in the city of Xiamen in Fujian Province southeastern China and the project to move it is seen as the biggest in the country’s history.

The authorities decided to move the bus station, which weighs 30,000 tonnes and takes up 21,000 square metres (162 by 33.6 metres or 531 by 110 feet) to make room for an expansion of a high-speed railway station.

The new bus station was lifted by 500 oil jacks and was moved 288 metres (944 feet) whilst also being turned 90 degrees.

The station was moved between 20 and 30 metres every ‘moving’ day during the 25-day project.

The station has now been deposited in its new home and is expected to be put into use in the future. Building work on the bus station began in 2010 and engineers claim moving the building rather than re-building it has saved them 50 million RMB (5.66 million GBP).

The move was made to make room for the Xiamen North train station extension project which is part of China’s move to high-speed trains.
