Nearly 2,000 German cockroaches were recently discovered by customs agents aboard an arriving ship, according to Chinese officials.
The discovery was made during a routine sanitary inspection, where customs officers discovered a significant infestation of cockroach adults, nymphs, and eggs in the ship’s kitchen, restaurant, and food storage area when it docked in Dalian’s Beiliang Port, in China’s Liaoning Province, on Thursday.
This prompted the issuance of a “Notice of Inspection and Quarantine” to the vessel.
To address the infestation, customs officers coordinated with a quarantine and pest control unit, which conducted immediate pest control and disinfection measures onboard, customs officials said in a 25th July statement.
During this operation, nearly 2,000 cockroaches were captured and removed from the ship, with the rest eliminated by fumigation and poison.
The actions taken were in accordance with the Frontier Health and Quarantine Law of the People’s Republic of China, which mandates that any incoming vehicles found to harbour disease-carrying insects or rodents must undergo disinfection and other necessary sanitary treatments to ensure public health.
Online commentators like ‘Despise The Shameless Dog Black’ said: “This ship is too dirty! Quarantine should be strengthened.”
And user ‘Moscow Double Headed Eagle’ said: “Fortunately, the customs officers had sharp eyes and intercepted it.”
While the user ‘Chushang Magazine’ said: “Beiliang Port Customs: Guarding the national border, even cockroaches are not spared!”
